Handbike Riders Once Again Part of Maraton Franja: A Story of Courage, Progress, and Inclusion

Maraton Franja once again remains true to its values of inclusion and bringing together all cycling enthusiasts. An important part of this story are handbike riders, who for many years have helped create the unique energy of the event through their presence.

The beginnings of handcycling in Slovenia date back to the early years of this century, with the first major breakthrough occurring around 2005, when several individuals decided to purchase handbikes and began participating more actively in recreational rides and cycling marathons.

An important milestone came in 2011, when the first two handbike riders took part in the Small Franja marathon. Since then, their presence has gradually increased, along with the recognition and acceptance of handcycling within the wider cycling community.

Over time, competitive handcycling also developed, taking Slovenian representatives to the highest level of the sport — all the way to the Paralympic Games and World Championships. These achievements prove that handcycling is a sport with exceptional potential, extending far beyond recreational activity and opening the door to top-level results.

At the same time, handcycling remains above all a story of individuals who, through great discipline, independent training, and strong inner motivation, overcome distances that many would consider unimaginable. Due to the geographical spread across Slovenia and the relatively small number of riders, most train independently, while occasionally coming together for group rides and events.

This sport also carries a special safety dimension. Because of their lower position on the road, handbike riders are more exposed and vulnerable, making the use of additional equipment — such as safety flags, lights, and mirrors — extremely important. Their presence on the road also highlights the importance of tolerance, attentiveness, and responsible behavior from all road users.

Maraton Franja is therefore not only a sporting challenge, but also a place where different stories, experiences, and journeys come together. The presence of handbike riders makes an important contribution to a broader understanding of an inclusive society and demonstrates that limits are often simply challenges that can be overcome.

This year again, handbike riders will be part of this story — as a symbol of perseverance, courage, and inspiration for all generations of cyclists.
